Slate or Ceramic Tile?
Your thinking of a new floor for your kitchen or bathroom, but then you have come down to a tough decision. Is it going to be a slate or ceramic tile floor in your kitchen or bathroom? It can be a hard decision and their are pros and cons on both sides. Maybe you currently have lino or wooden flooring and you are seriously considering a change.
One of the things that is often said about any stone floor, is that they are very hardwearing, but also very hard. There is no give in a stone floor, so they are likely to be very hard on the feet, joints and back, especially if your going to be standing in the kitchen for long periods of time preparing food or doing other things. Something to consider, especially if family members may be more advanced in years.
The other issue with any time of slate or ceramic floor is that any glass vessel dropped is going to create an almighty mess as there is going to be zero bounce. A bottle of wine dropped on a stone floor is going to go everywhere. And stone floors can be notoriously difficult to clean, as they are porous and so will absorb some of the material pored onto them on contact, making it extremely difficult to remove stains. Some people do complain that slate can have a natural dirty look that is near impossible to remove.
Another thing to consider with slate floors is that they are going to be very cold, which is not so much of a problem in summer, but in winter they are going to be brrrrrrr!
But the look of a nice slate floor is hard to be beaten.
But some people go for ceramic floor tiles, as some of these can give the look of slate, but without some of the maintenance hassles, as slate will have to be sealed on a regular basis to keep them looking good.
Other options if you decide for something a little softer on the feet, is to consider a bamboo or cork floor, they are both springy and forgiving. Or if you dont need it that soft, go for hardwood flooring and that has a little more give and will be softer on the feet and joints.

Wetroom Tiles
Wetroom Tiles
Wetrooms are more commonly appearing in the latest bathroom designs. The idea for the wetroom came from Scandinavia, where they had the ingenious idea of taking the swimming pool concept and placing a waterproof membrane beneath wall and floor tiles instead of having a shower tray and partitions. If you have space for one, wet rooms are much more free and open than the ubiquitous shower cubical, the wet room being the bathroom equivalent of the open plan kitchen and lounge.
